Capstone Paper

An accomplished leader is a strong communicator, motivator and problem solver. Building teams, motivating employees, measuring client needs and managing conflicts are some of the critical tasks of a leader. The definition of leadership is â€Å"the ability to inspire confidence and support among the people who are needed to achieve organizational goals† (Durbin, 2). This is the primary goal of a good leader however I believe the leader needs to have a certain number of characteristics or traits in order to provide this to his/her employees. Loud have to say that the most important traits of a good leader are a passion for the work and the people, self-confidence and trustworthiness. I think that it is crucial for a great leader to be passionate bout the work that they do as well as the team that they are leading. Within my current role as a Senior Business Support Coordinator, we're required to take on a leadership role on an almost daily basis. One particular instance that re call of which I had to take on a complete leadership role was during a snow storm. I was one of the only seniors or management that was actually able to make it into the office.With the few of us that were actually able to make it into the office, took control and distributed all of the cases that needed to be handled that day. I made sure we had appropriate phone overage and triages all incoming work that was received. On this day with short staffing we were able to handle all of the cases that were due for that day and we had not late reports to our home office or the FDA. The association amongst effective performance evaluations and employee morale is very close. Actually, one of the core reasons to evaluate employees is to encourage them.As a leader, this is an opportunity to reinforce things an employee does well and provide correction and planning for areas that need improvement. It is important to understand that performance evaluations re definitely a necessary evil, however the process chosen to evaluate one's employees needs to be considered very carefully. Problem Statement The issues with performance evaluations are not within the systems themselves but in how they are administered. It is hard for an employee to deal with a negative performance evaluation in general.However, it is even harder to deal with a performance evaluation that one would consider average when the employee may feel that their work performance level is really much higher. Research Design This capstone paper will consist of taking a anonymous poll within my apartment of my co-workers in regards to how they feel about how the process of performance evaluations are handled with our organization. How these performance evaluations and promotions affect their work performance and feeling about the company. Results of Study Within my company we have a system in which we used called the UP system.This system has all of our goals that are cascaded down from out managers. Within the pro duct safety department the majority of all our goals are group goals so it is extremely hard to stand out individually. It allows for a â€Å"loafer to receive the same rewards because the other's pick up the slack and still hey look good in return. In December and January of each year the employee lists their progress, weight goals, lists any accomplishments, year- end self-appraisal on UP/LDAP (Individual Development Plan) and we submit them to our manager.The manager and employee then discuss to ensure everything is clear and accurate. The manager then obtains feedback and input on the employee's performance and behavior from others and participates in calibration. Calibration is a system of checks and balances that ensures the employee's performance is rated as fairly, objectively and equitably as possible. The next step to the UP process is to have the manager draft UP year-end appraisal considering employee's self-appraisal, input and managers own observations. Here is where the issue in my opinion comes into play.It is understandable that feedback is necessary in order for managers to make an accurate assessment of the employee's performance and behavior. When the managers meet to discuss ratings they are allowed to provide input on each employee even if they do not directly work with that employee. How is it possible to make an assessment on an employee's performance or behavior if a manager is not directly working with them at any time? I believe the feedback should come directly from those that work directly with the employee so that a true assessment and feedback Can be given.We are also required to attach to our UP system is a form that is called an DIP or Individual development plan. The purpose of this form is to set long term goals for your career path and your manager is supposed to help you GU did. After all this has been performed at the end of the year and an assessment has been performed a rating is applied to the employee.

Crime Scene Essay

In an organized step by step approach â€Å"Scene Documentation† is one of the stages in the proper processing of a crime scene. The final results of a properly documented crime scene are the ability of others to take the finished product to use in either reconstructing the scene or the chain of events in an incident and our court room presentation. In documenting the scene there are actually three functions or methods used to properly document the crime scene. Those methods consist of written notes which will ultimately be used in constructing a final report, crime scene photographs, and a diagram or sketch. Consistency between each of these functions is paramount. Each method is important in the process of properly documenting the crime scene. The notes and reports should be done in a chronological order and should include no opinions, no analysis, or any conclusions; just the facts. The crime scene investigator or evidence recovery technician should document what they see, not what they think. The final report should tell a descriptive and factual story. A general description of the crime scene should be given just as the investigator sees it when she does the initial walk through of the scene. Each department or agency has a method which they use will for written documentation of the crime scene. There investigator or technician should follow her departments assigned procedures for written documentation. The importance of sharing information can never be over-looked. This article is intended to share ideas in the area of uniform documentation as an example of the format that is used by my department. We use a narrative section of the report divided it into five categories. The categories are the summary, the scene including a detailed body description if in a death investigation, processing, and evidence collected, and the pending that may be collected at another date or time. The summary would to basically give the details of how he was initiated into the investigation. For an example: â€Å"At the request of Robbery Detective H. Granier, this writer was requested to respond to assist in processing the scene of an armed robbery involving 4 unknown masked subjects. Detective H. Granier’s preliminary investigation revealed that the subjects startled the victim as she returned home from shopping†. For further details of this investigation refer to Detective H. Granier. Our summary is brief and does not include a lot of the said information  (http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/unavailable/) The investigator in charge should obtain the following for the crime scene case file: 1. Initial responding officer documentation. 2. Emergency medical personnel documents. 3. Entry and exit documentation. 4. Photographs and any videos. 5. Crime scene sketches and diagrams. 6. Evidence documentation. 7. Other responders’ documentation. 8. Record of consent form or search warrant. 9. Criminal background check Reports such as forensic or technical reports should be added to this file when they become available. This will ensure that reports and other documentation pertaining to the crime scene investigation are compiled into a case file by the investigator in charge of the crime scene and allow for independent review of the work conducted. In the scene section of the narrative we should give a detailed description of the scene as it is seen when we approach the area. The scene description usually includes anything that is unusual and out of place. Any weather or environment conditions are also included. Again this is a description of what we see, not what we think. The evidence that should observe is: its location, the condition, or anything about the item will be included in our scene description section. This would also correspond to any identification markers used to number or label the items of evidence. These remarks would all be consistent with any numbers, letters, or labels indicated in the photographs, or drawn into a sketch of the scene (http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/unavailable/). The processing section is for our units to describe what we did, if assistance was needed during the processing stages, who we had assisting, and what functions they did. The evidence collection section is to organize what evidence we and others assisting were able to recover from the crime scene, where the items were recovered from, and what part of the lab the items were  directed to for analysis. Criminal History A Criminal History Summary often referred to as a criminal history record or a â€Å"rap sheet† is a listing of certain information taken from fingerprint submissions retained by the FBI in connection with arrests and, in some instances, federal employment, naturalization, or military service. If no Criminal History Summary on file, the investigator will receive a response indicating that the person has no prior arrest data on file. If the person does have a criminal history Summary on file, you will receive your summary†. Pending Section The pending section would be for any known tasks that would need to be completed at a later date or time in the investigation. What is turned in to the Department? 1. Brief history of IHG: Essay

The history of intercontinental is rooted in an unlikely industry that traces back to 1777. William Bass was the visionary of a brewery company, Bass, that was based in the UK, and had acquired a number of well-known brewery companies up until the 1960s. These additions made Bass one of the largest brewers and pub owners in the UK. It was not until 1988 that Bass decided to move into the hotel industry with its purchase of Holiday Inns International. A stroke of luck and timely business interests made this acquisition more opportune than ever envisioned. The following year legislation passed the â€Å"Beer Orders,† that limits the number of pubs major brewers can own. Consequentially, Bass limits their number of Pubs and focuses on further hotel developments. The ensuing decade significantly shapes Intercontinental as it is recognized today. In 1990 Bass buys North American Holiday Inn business and launches Holiday Inn internationally. Holiday Inn Express is developed in 1991 to serve the limited service segment and Crowne Plaza was branded in 1994 to appeal to the upscale market. Bass takes another journey in the field of hospitality in 1995 with its purchase of the Harvester restaurant chain. Late in 1996, Bass again tries to reemerge in the pub industry, but was met with unwavering barriers. Franchising becomes apart of the business outline of Bass in 1997 when it decides to sell their North American mid-scale properties to private owners flying under the same Bass branded flags. 1998 brought forth the most noteworthy change in Bass’s purchase of the InterContinental hotels. This was the first addition that brought a Bass brand to an upper-scale market. In 2000 it sells Bass Brewers and changes the company’s name to 6Continents and in 2001 acquires the European Posthouse Chain. It later purchases InterContinental Hong Kong and with these acquisitions 6contienets develops a strong hold on the Asian Pacific travel market. In 2002 the company divides into two separate entities, one for hotels and the other for soft drinks. On April 15, 2003 the name of the hotel sector is officially changed to the InterContinental Hotels Group. In 2004 the addition of Hotel Indigo is made and Staybridge Suites UK launches in 2005. 2006 was another year for IHG’s Global expansion to Asia with its joint venture with All Nippon Airways, which is the largest hotel operator in Japan.
